Als introductie op deze sectie over afwezige vaders, wordt geschetst hoe het onderzoek naar kinderen die opgroeien zonder vader zich na de Tweede Wereldoorlog heeft ontplooid. Van onderzoek dat zich – via indirecte wegen – bezighield met kinderen zonder vaders als homogene groep, is het ontwikkeld tot onderzoek dat zijn aandacht – via meer directe wegen – richt op de differentiatie binnen deze groep. Tot slot volgt een bespreking van de manieren waarop de onderzoeken in de drie overige bijdragen binnen deze sectie ingaan op de afwezigheid van vaders.
