Een terugblik op dertig jaar kinder- en jeugdpsychiatrie

Samenvatting

In dit artikel wordt teruggeblikt op dertig jaar universitaire kinder- en jeugdpsychiatrie in Rotterdam. Epidemiologisch onderzoek heeft een belangrijke rol gespeeld voor de kinder- en jeugdpsychiatrische praktijk. Een conclusie die uit dit soort onderzoek getrokken kan worden, is dat de complexiteit van psychopathologie op de kinderleeftijd en in de adolescentie maakt dat er geen plaats is voor simpele verklaringsmodellen. Op zijn best vinden we vele kleine effecten, op verschillende niveaus, vanuit diverse perspectieven en disciplines, en elk gericht op een heel klein deel van het oorzakelijke proces dat tot stoornissen leidt. Wetenschappelijk onderzoek is nodig om te verklaren hoe psychiatrische stoornissen ontstaan en hoe deze te voorkomen en te behandelen zijn. Dit soort objectieve, verifieerbare en generaliseerbare kennis komt tot stand door reductie van de werkelijkheid. Dit is niet voldoende om kinderen en adolescenten met probleemgedrag en hun ouders te helpen. Hiervoor is ook kennis nodig die subjectief, individueel invoelend en begrijpend is, met als doel het unieke van de patiënt te begrijpen. Dit soort kennis komt tot stand door empathie en vanuit menselijke relaties. Universitaire kinder- en jeugdpsychiatrie is van belang om empirisch-wetenschappelijke kennis en klinische praktijk te verbinden.
