Klein beginnen: over de noodzaak van ontwikkelingsonderzoek naar de rol van waarneming in het ontstaan van psychopathologie

samenvatting

Onderzoek heeft laten zien dat mensen met autisme een basale afwijking in de visuele waarneming hebben. Deze waarnemingsafwijkingen zijn waarschijnlijk direct negatief gerelateerd aan het vermogen om op een optimale manier sociale informatie (zoals gezichten) te kunnen verwerken. De oorzaak van de waarnemingsafwijking heeft waarschijnlijk te maken met relatief kleine veranderingen in de communicatie tussen hersencellen in autisme. Om meer te begrijpen over de relatie tussen dergelijke subtiele veranderingen in hersenfunctioneren en de klinische symptomen van autisme, is ontwikkelingsonderzoek essentieel.
