Effectiever behandelen tussen ‘nature’ en ‘nurture’

Samenvatting:

De klinische kinder- en jeugdpsychologie beweegt zich binnen het spanningsveld van biologische bepaaldheid en ‘maakbaarheid’. Welke speelruimte is er voor beïnvloeding door de omgeving, bijvoorbeeld via systematische gedragsverandering? Kan een in aanleg angstig kind een dapper kind worden, een impulsief kind bedachtzaam? Juist in het systematisch beïnvloeden van omgeving en gedrag van kinderen heeft de klinische kinder- en jeugdpsychologie grote vooruitgang geboekt. Er zijn meer dan 1500 gecontroleerde klinische ‘trials’ gepubliceerd die een arsenaal van bewezen werkzame behandelingen hebben opgeleverd. Toch laat de impact hiervan op de klinische praktijk te wensen over. Meer effect is mogelijk via kennis van werkzame mechanismen, waardoor behandelingen beter op de specifieke kenmerken van een stoornis afgestemd kunnen worden.
