Hersengolven geven inzicht in de positieve kanten van veroudering

Samenvatting

Veroudering gaat samen met lichamelijke en cognitieve achteruitgang. Toch zijn er aanwijzingen dat niet alles achteruitgaat door veroudering. Zo zou het gedrag van mensen naarmate ze ouder worden meer door emotie- en minder door kennisgerelateerde doelen bepaald worden. Dit zou ertoe leiden dat mensen naarmate ze ouder worden steeds meer nadruk gaan leggen op positieve informatie en minder op negatieve informatie. Hoewel dit positiviteitseffect niet in alle gevallen optreedt, is het in een aantal studies geobserveerd bij gedrag of bij hersenactiviteit. In een van onze onderzoeken bleek het positiviteitseffect zowel bij prestatie op een geheugentaak als bij hersengolven op te treden. De verschuiving naar emotiegerelateerde doelen tijdens veroudering zou ook leiden tot een verbeterde emotieregulatie. In een studie waarin hersengolven als objectieve maat voor succes van emotieregulatie werden genomen, vonden we echter geen steun voor het idee dat emotieregulatie verschilt tussen jong volwassenen en ouderen.
