De effecten op traumatische stressproblemen van een pleegouderinterventie voor kinderen met externaliserende gedragsproblemen

Samenvatting

Ongeveer 60% van de pleegkinderen maakt traumatische gebeurtenissen mee en ongeveer één op de vier pleegkinderen heeft als gevolg hiervan traumatische stresssymptomen. In dit artikel gaan we na of een pleegouderinterventie ontwikkeld voor pleegkinderen met externaliserende gedragsproblemen ook effecten heeft op traumatische stressproblemen. De sim-module van Pleegouders Versterken in Opvoeden is gebaseerd op het sociaal-interactioneel model (Patterson, Reid, & Dishion, 1992) en op een model van belangrijke opvoedingsvaardigheden voor pleegkinderen van Schofield en Beek (2005). De effectiviteit van de interventie is onderzocht met een rct waarbij 30 pleeggezinnen de pleegouderinterventie kregen en 33 pleeggezinnen ‘care-as-usual’. De traumatische stressproblemen zijn voorafgaand aan de interventie, onmiddellijk erna en bij follow-up (drie maanden later) gemeten met de subschaal ‘traumatische stress’ van de Child Behavior Checklist (ingevuld door de pleegmoeder). Op korte termijn daalden de traumatische stressproblemen niet statistisch significant. De effectgrootte is klein (d= .35). Op lange termijn is de daling echter significant en is de effectgrootte matig (d= .77). De pleegouderinterventie komt tegemoet aan belangrijke opvoedingsvaardigheden die nodig zijn voor pleegkinderen met traumatische stressproblemen. De preliminaire evidentie voor de effectiviteit van de pleegouderinterventie op traumatische stressproblemen verantwoordt een verdere implementatie en onderzoek.
