Traumatische gebeurtenissen en traumatische stresssymptomen bij pleegkinderen: een verkennende studie in vlaanderen

Samenvatting

Het trauma-perspectief wordt steeds meer gehanteerd in het begrijpen van problemen in het functioneren van pleegkinderen. In dit artikel wordt gerapporteerd over de eerste Vlaamse studie vanuit dit perspectief.
Er wordt gebruikgemaakt van een systematische screening van pleegkinderen (tussen 3 en 18 jaar) in bijna alle Vlaamse pleegzorgdiensten. Via deze screening vulden pleegouders een Child Behavior Checklist in. De schalen ‘Post-traumatische stressproblemen’ en ‘Stressproblemen’ meten de traumatische stresssymptomen. Op basis van de aanmeldingsredenen, ingevuld in de vragenlijst voor pleegzorgbegeleiders, werden categorieën van traumatische gebeurtenissen onderscheiden.
Vijfentachtig procent van de pleegkinderen maakte minstens één traumatische gebeurtenis mee en 29 procent vertoonde traumatische stresssymptomen. Pleegkinderen die slachtoffer waren van verwaarlozing of fysieke mishandeling alsook pleegkinderen die meer traumatische gebeurtenissen meemaakten, vertoonden meer traumatische stresssymptomen. Bovendien vertoonden netwerkpleegkinderen minder traumatische stresssymptomen dan bestandspleegkinderen.
Dit onderzoek toonde dat het ook in Vlaanderen zinvol is om dit traumaperspectief te hanteren bij pleegkinderen.
