Obstructief slaapapneusyndroom (OSAS): definitie, diagnostiek en behandeling

Samenvatting

Het obstructief slaapapneusyndroom (OSAS) is een veelvoorkomende slaapafhankelijke ademhalingsstoornis, die wordt gekenmerkt door intensief snurken, herhaaldelijke obstructies van de bovenste luchtweg en overmatige slaperigheid overdag. Ongeveer 2% van de vrouwen en 4% van de mannen op middelbare leeftijd heeft OSAS. Hoogstwaarschijnlijk wordt het overgrote deel van de patiënten echter niet gediagnosticeerd. Dit komt mogelijk doordat een groot aantal symptomen en klachten die ook geassocieerd zijn met OSAS, niet direct worden herkend als mogelijke signalen van OSAS. Als eenmaal de diagnose OSAS is gesteld, staat de clinicus een aantal conservatieve, noninvasieve en chirurgische behandelopties ter beschikking, mede afhankelijk van de ernst van de OSAS.
