Adult individuals with intellectual disabilities (IDs) are a clinically diverse group who often present with neuropsychiatric, behavioral, and emotional conditions, most notably epilepsy, aggression, self-injurious behaviors, and bipolar and other mood disorders. Multimodal therapy including psychotherapy and psychopharmacological treatments is often indicated to manage these complex conditions. A lack of current, reliable, and unified information on medical treatments for adults with IDs poses a challenge to providers who recommend treatments for these individuals. A Practitioner’s Guide to Prescribing Antiepileptics and Mood Stabilizers for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities narrows this gap in the literature by providing a detailed framework for prescribing anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing medicines for this population. Jose de Leon and 12 coauthors present comprehensive drug guidelines they developed for 21 oral antiepileptics and/or mood stabilizers, as well as brief guidelines for non-oral antiepileptics. …
