Hangen gamen en sociale-mediagebruik samen met schoolverzuim?

Samenvatting

Voor sommige jongeren kunnen gamen en het gebruik van sociale media een risico voor de sociaal-emotionele of lichamelijke ontwikkeling vormen. We hebben onderzocht of er een verband bestaat tussen gamen en schoolverzuim en tussen het gebruik van sociale media en schoolverzuim. Ruim 16.000 jongeren vulden een digitale vragenlijst (E-MOVO) in naar sociaal-emotionele en lichamelijke gezondheid. Voor 3793 leerlingen (23 % respons) zijn de antwoorden op E‑MOVO gekoppeld aan verzuimstaten. De uitkomstmaten zijn het aantal lesuren ziekteverzuim en ongeoorloofd verzuim. We hebben korte vragenlijsten gebruikt, gebaseerd op de Video game Addiction Test, naar zowel gamen als sociale-mediagebruik. We vinden geen samenhang tussen gamen of het gebruik van sociale media en ziekteverzuim. Problematisch gamegedrag blijkt na correctie voor sociale demografie en psychosociale factoren samen te hangen met ongeoorloofd verzuim. Er lijkt sprake van een groep jongeren met problematisch gamegedrag die meer spijbelt. De verzuimstaat van jongeren met problematisch gamegedrag of gebruik van sociale media kan klinisch nuttig zijn. Prospectief onderzoek naar het beloop van problematisch gamegedrag/sociale-mediagebruik, psychosociale problemen en schoolverzuim verdient overweging.
