Mensen met een lagere sociaal-economische status, meestal geïndiceerd door een laag opleidings-, beroeps- of inkomensniveau, leven in het welvarende Nederland zes tot zeven jaar korter. Het kortere leven brengen ze ook nog eens achttien tot negentien jaar langer door met ziekte dan hun landgenoten met een hogere sociaal-economische status. Deze basale verbanden vind je ook terug wanneer je naar de geografische verschillen in gezondheid in Nederland kijkt. Zuid-Limburg en Groningen hebben wat betreft zowel de sociaal-economische als de gezondheidssituatie een achterstand ten opzichte van de rest van Nederland. Ook binnen dezelfde stad, op kleinere geografische schaal dus, vind je vaak al grote verschillen in de gezondheidstoestand van mensen die in rijke en arme buurten wonen. …
