Meer herstel voor veteranen én hun gezin

Samenvatting

Ongeveer 5 % van de Nederlandse veteranen ontwikkelt een posttraumatische stressstoornis (PTSS) en ongeveer 15 % een of meer symptomen hiervan. Niet alleen hebben de symptomen van een PTSS en aan de uitzending gerelateerde klachten invloed op de veteraan zelf, maar ook gezinsleden ondervinden er negatieve effecten van. Om de ervaringen en behoeften in de zorg voor veteranen en hun gezin te exploreren zijn semigestructureerde interviews afgenomen bij 34 deelnemers uit tien gezinnen die een meergezinsbehandeling voor getraumatiseerde veteranen hebben gevolgd bij Psychotraumacentrum Zuid Nederland. De problemen, behoeften en aanbevelingen van deelnemers zijn geanalyseerd. De geïnterviewde veteranen beschrijven een lange toeleiding naar hulpverlening en naar uiteindelijk gespecialiseerde zorg voor PTSS en aan uitzending gerelateerde problematiek. Wanneer veteranen in zorg zijn, geven gezinnen aan dat er onvoldoende aandacht is voor het gezin achter de veteraan. Dit heeft gevolgen voor het gezinsfunctioneren en het functioneren van gezinsleden. Het blijkt lastig voor het Ministerie van Defensie om het gezin te betrekken in het militaire leven, maar het blijkt ook moeilijk voor de veteraan om het gezin te betrekken bij de benodigde uitzendinggerelateerde zorg. Een mentaliteitsverandering waarin het thuisfront niet alleen mag bestaan, maar betrokken mag blijven, kan het herstel van militair en gezin na uitzending bespoedigen.
