In het Nederlands Kanker Instituut wordt al geruime tijd onderzoek gedaan naar de effecten kanker en kankerbehandeling op de cognitieve functies. Naast uitgebreid onderzoek naar de effecten van verschillende soorten chemotherapie wordt ook onderzoek verricht naar de effecten van hormonale therapie op cognitief functioneren. In de behandeling van borstkanker spelen hormonale therapieën namelijk een belangrijke rol. Een hoog percentage van de borsttumoren is voor de groei afhankelijk van oestrogenen. Met hormonale behandeling wordt getracht de aanmaak en/of de groeibevorderende werking van oestrogenen te blokkeren en daarmee de groei van de tumor te remmen. …
