Preklinische psychiatrie: diermodellen voor depressie

Abstract

Hersenen zijn complex en het onderzoek naar de functie van de verschillende hersendelen is nog rudimentair, alle mooie verhalen en technische ontwikkelingen ten spijt. Hersenziekten, en dan vooral psychiatrische hersenziekten zoals depressie, zijn als we heel eerlijk zijn totaal onbegrepen. Dit komt het duidelijkst naar voren als we naar de farmacotherapie en de ontwikkelingen van nieuwe therapieën kijken. We hebben toevallig (serendipiteit) de eerste antidepressiva (tricyclisch) ontdekt en sinds die tijd is er geen echte vernieuwing meer opgetreden (zie ook het artikel van Minke Jongsma in Neuropraxis 4, 2006, 97–101). De nieuwere antidepressiva zijn vooral variaties op het oude thema en het is nog maar de vraag of we de komende vijftig jaar nieuwe doorbraken op dit gebied zullen doormaken. Diermodellen zullen een belangrijke bijdrage moeten leveren aan het verkrijgen van werkelijk nieuwe inzichten.
