Zelfbewuste emoties in de kindertijd

De behoefte aan verbondenheid – het aangaan en onderhouden van sociale relaties – is een van de fundamenteelste menselijke behoeftes (Baumeister en Leary 1995). De evolutie heeft de mens uitgerust met een vermogen tot het ervaren van zelfbewuste emoties, die een belangrijke rol spelen in sociale relaties. Zelfbewuste emoties, zoals verlegenheid, gêne en schaamte, treden op wanneer iemand zich bewust wordt van zichzelf (Tangney et al. 2007) en beseft dat hij of zij een slechte indruk op anderen zou kunnen maken (Leary et al. 1992). Deze emoties treden op wanneer iemand een fout maakt, een regel overtreedt of in het middelpunt van de aandacht staat (Keltner en Buswell 1997). Mensen voelen zich bijvoorbeeld verlegen wanneer ze iemand ontmoeten die ze aantrekkelijk vinden; ze voelen zich gegeneerd wanneer ze iets onhandigs zeggen; en ze voelen zich beschaamd wanneer ze beseffen dat ze iemand om wie ze geven hebben beledigd of gekwetst. Deze emoties helpen mensen om hun eigen fouten te erkennen en te repareren, om zodoende te voorkomen dat ze worden afgewezen of buitengesloten (Keltner en Buswell 1997). …
