Samenvatting

Tijdens inspanning in hitte en kou staat de mens voor de uitdaging om warmteproductie en -afgifte in balans te houden. Als de warmteafgifte onvoldoende is, stijgt de lichaamstemperatuur en daarmee daalt de prestatie. Door adequate acclimatisatie aan hitte kan het lichaam zich goed aanpassen. Andere manieren om prestatieverlies in de hitte te reduceren zijn koeling en een betere verdeling van het vermogen tijdens de inspanning. Aan koude kan de mens zich nauwelijks fysiologisch aanpassen; we moeten daarom vooral gedragsmatig slimmer opereren. Meer kleding is een vereiste, maar het extra gewicht en de extra weerstand verslechteren de prestatie. De warmtebalans verschilt soms aanzienlijk tussen individuen, bijvoorbeeld door verschillen in zweetsecretie. Met eenvoudige meetmiddelen kan de balans worden bepaald en kunnen op het individu gerichte adviezen worden gegeven.
