Sociale steun van ouders en vrienden en emotionele problemen in de adolescentie

Uit recent Nederlands onderzoek blijkt dat tussen de dertien en zevenentwintig procent van de Nederlandse jongeren ernstige emotionele problemen ervaart (Diekstra e.a., 1991; Meeus, 1994b). Deze emotionele problemen bestaan uit depressiviteit, eenzaamheid, lage zelfwaardering, sociale isolatie en suïcidale gedachten. Bevindingen uit andere landen laten vergelijkbare percentages zien (zie bijv. Offer, Ostrov, Howard & Atkinson, 1988; American Medical Association, 1990). Emotionele problemen nemen toe tijdens de adolescentie, en voor een aanzienlijk aantal adolescenten zouden ze chronisch kunnen worden (Laufer & Laufer, 1984). Meisjes ervaren over het algemeen meer emotionele problemen dan jongens (Kandel & Davies, 1982; Kienhorst, 1988; Meeus, 1993; White, 1989). Gegeven de grote aantallen en de gevolgen die deze problemen kunnen hebben voor verdere sociale aanpassing, is het van zowel maatschappelijk als wetenschappelijk belang om de determinanten van emotionele problemen in de adolescentie te onderzoeken. In dit artikel richten we ons op de relaties van adolescenten met ouders en leeftijdgenoten, en de invloed hiervan op het ontstaan van emotionele problemen. We proberen dit te begrijpen vanuit de veranderingen die in de adolescentie optreden in sociale relaties met ouders en leeftijdgenoten. We gaan eerst in op de relationele veranderingen in de adolescentie en resultaten van empirisch onderzoek naar de relatie met psychisch welbevinden. Vervolgens worden resultaten van eigen onderzoek gepresenteerd. …
