Sociale steun van ouders en vrienden en emotionele problemen in de adolescentie

Samenvatting

Bij een steekproef van 2918 jongeren in de leeftijd van 12 tot 24 jaar werd onderzocht of waargenomen sociale steun van ouders en van vrienden samenhangen, in het bijzonder met betrekking tot emotionele problemen. Tevens werd gekeken of hierin veranderingen optreden gedurende de adolescentie, en of jongens en meisjes verschillen op de onderzochte verbanden. Ouderlijke en vriendensteun blijken relatief onafhankelijke steunsystemen. Tot de leeftijd van zestien jaar neemt ouderlijke steun af en vriendensteun toe, daarna blijven ze op ongeveer gelijke hoogte. Ouderlijke steun is op alle leeftijden en voor zowel jongens als meisjes de sterkste voorspeller, en heeft een positief effect op het welbevinden. Het effect van steun van vrienden is daarentegen afwezig. Steun van ouders en steun van vrienden blijken ook slechts in lichte mate met elkaar samen te hangen. Dat bevestigt het idee dat ouders en leeftijdgenoten twee afzonderlijke steunsystemen vormen.
