Therapeutic Interventions for Families and Children in the Child Welfare System, by Sheri Pickover and Heather Brown, is a resource for those in the mental health industry that helps explain key concepts in the child welfare system, the effects of involvement on families and children, and how to best structure interventions for those in the system. The book opens with a preface that explains the purpose of the book and additionally opens with a great metaphor comparing the system, and consequently each chapter within the book, to a kaleidoscope. The authors explain that each of the individualized cases encountered in the child welfare system is complex and, like a kaleidoscope, the colors and pieces are constantly changing in the shape and configuration that the professional working with them sees. They use this as a reminder to keep looking at the different sides of each involved issue for the duration of a case. …
