Het verplaatsen van de zorg van een acute setting naar de thuissituatie wordt tegenwoordig gezien als een belangrijke manier om de kosten van de gezondheidszorg zo veel mogelijk te beperken. Systematische reviews laten zien dat het vervroegd ontslaan uit het ziekenhuis van COPD-patiënten veilig en kosteneffectief is.
