De afweer tegen microbiële infecties in ziekenhuizen heeft in Amerikaanse ziekenhuizen bijna epidemische vormen aangenomen wat geleid heeft tot verplicht gestelde infectiecontrolemaatregelen. Talloze programma’s zijn ontwikkeld om contaminatie met resistente bacteriën te voorkomen.2) Om besmetting met multiresistente bacteriën (multidrug-resistant organisms = MDRO) te voorkomen wordt onder andere contactisolatie aanbevolen; het is meestal een vast onderdeel van het behandelbeleid. Er bestaan nog altijd irrationele weerstanden tegen het dragen van een mondkapje en handschoenen bij patiëntcontact.3,4) Andere studies geven aan dat isolatie een negatieve impact kan hebben op de mentale gezondheid van patiënten.5-9) …
