Het effect van sociale vergelijkingsinformatie op de levenssatisfactie van fragiele ouderen

Samenvatting

Sociale vergelijking wordt in toenemende mate erkend als een belangrijke cognitieve strategie bij het omgaan met leeftijdsgerelateerde veranderingen. Door zich te vergelijken met leeftijdsgenoten die het slechter doen, i.e., neerwaartse vergelijking, kunnen ouderen hun eigen situatie op een positieve manier herinterpreteren: “Hoewel ik mijn boodschappen niet meer zelf kan doen, mag ik me gelukkig prijzen vergeleken met anderen die hun huis helemaal niet meer uit komen”. Op deze manier kunnen ouderen, ondanks leeftijdsgerelateerde verliezen, toch een bepaalde mate van tevredenheid met hun leven behouden. Wij onderzochten het effect van sociale vergelijkingsinformatie op de levenssatisfactie van 455 thuiswonende ouderen. Deze ouderen kregen een fictief interview te lezen met een opwaartse, dan wel een neerwaartse vergelijkingsander. Na neerwaartse vergelijking werd meer tevredenheid over de eigen situatie gerapporteerd dan na opwaartse vergelijking, vooral onder ouderen met een hogere mate van fragiliteit. Deze effecten werden echter alleen gevonden bij een lagere mate van identificatie met de vergelijkingsander. Bij een hogere mate van identificatie rapporteerden fragiele ouderen meer levenssatisfactie na opwaartse dan na neerwaartse vergelijking. Blijkbaar hebben fragiele ouderen alleen baat bij neerwaartse vergelijking wanneer ze de vergelijkingsander als verschillend ervaren.

Om te controleren voor de significante relatie tussen het hebben van een partner en levenssatisfactie werd deze demografische variabele in de eerste stap van de regressievergelijking opgenomen. Dit veranderde echter niets aan de gerapporteerde bevindingen;.
