Het belang van de prenatale levensfase voor de ontwikkeling van psychopathologie

Samenvatting

In dit artikel wordt beschreven hoe de bidirectionele wisselwerkingen of transacties tussen vier niveaus (genetische activiteit, neurale activiteit, gedrag en omgeving) de fenotypische uitkomst van ontwikkeling probabilistisch bepalen. Het biedt een overzicht van wat bekend is over deze wisselwerkingen in de prenatale ontwikkelingsperiode, waarbij de nadruk ligt op de risico’s die eruit kunnen voortvloeien. Na een korte uiteenzetting van de prenatale ontwikkeling, wordt stilgestaan bij de mechanismen van de genetische expressie en het vraagstuk van de relatie tussen genotype en fenotype. Ten slotte komt de functionele of gedragsteratologie aan bod, die essentieel deel uitmaakt van de ontwikkelingspsychopathologie.
