In the review of the previous volume of
With the Light: Raising an Autistic child (5), (
Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 41: 381–382, February 14,
2011), I included references to Ingulsrud and Allen’s
Reading Japan cool: Patterns of manga literacy and discourse (
2009), “where the authors provide a wealth of information to help Western readers understand manga such as Tobe’s
With the light (
2009)” (p. 381). I wrote that “Ingulsrud and Allen explain the interactive nature between the readership and the producers of manga. Initially manga are introduced to the general public through magazines which are a collection of stories by a variety of authors. Consumers of the magazines tell the publishers which story lines are their favorites and suggest plots” (p. 381). At the end of the review I vowed to contact the publishers to encourage them to continue translating the series into English. I was only able to locate Volumes 1–5 at the time. Shortly after the review was published I was contacted by the publisher who informed me that there were other volumes in the series available in the United States. Volumes 6–8 were available; however, that was the end of the series. Keiko Tobe, the author, had died. …
