Het gelijk van Freud … over de oorsprong van abnormaal gedrag

Samenvatting

De psychodynamische theorie van Freud is grotendeels gebaseerd op gevalsbeschrijvingen van abnormaal menselijk gedrag. Wetenschappelijk gezien zijn de analyses die Freud van deze gevallen maakt onacceptabel, omdat de belangrijkste bouwstenen van zijn theorie niet empirisch getoetst kunnen worden. In één opzicht had Freud echter gelijk: de oorsprong van abnormaal gedrag ligt veelal in de jeugd. In dit artikel worden factoren besproken die een rol spelen bij het ontstaan van abnormaal gedrag bij kinderen en adolescenten. Verder wordt betoogd dat meer aandacht moet worden besteed aan de vroege detectie van psychische problemen bij kinderen, zodat eerder kan worden geïntervenieerd. De basisschool kan daarbij een belangrijke rol spelen, maar dan moet er wel voor gezorgd worden dat de leerkrachten over meer kennis van zaken beschikken.
