2. Gerontologische theorieën

Abstract

De zoektocht naar de sleutel tot het duistere mysterie genaamd ‘ouderdom’ heeft vele wetenschappers aangezet tot theorievorming over dit verschijnsel en een speurtocht naar de mogelijke oorzaken ervan. Gerontologie is een relatief jonge wetenschap en menig wetenschapper heeft de uitdaging ervaren die het onderzoek op dit gebied met zich meebrengt. Diverse theorieën over het ouder worden zijn in de loop der tijd geformuleerd, en de belangrijkste daarvan worden in dit hoofdstuk besproken en met elkaar vergeleken. Deze kritische kijk op ‘hedendaagse’ theorieën verschaft een basis voor het kunnen begrijpen en kritisch evalueren van de volgende hoofdstukken, waarin het normaal en pathologisch verouderen en de klinische observaties en strategieën voor het inrichten van de zorg voor ouderen aan de orde komen.
