Abstract

Demografie is de wetenschappelijke studie van de populatie. Toenemende aandacht wordt geschonken aan de demografie van de veroudering, een subveld van de algemene demografie dat zich bezighoudt met de vragen van de sociaal gerontologen. Demografie blijft een fundamentele kennisbasis voor de studie van veroudering. De studie van de ‘demografie van de veroudering’ is gericht op het bepalen wat de staat van de oudere populaties is, veranderingen in die getallen, proportionele grootte en samenstelling van deze subpopulatie; de invloeden van vruchtbaarheid, sterfelijkheid, ziekte, migratie en emigratie; en de invloeden van deze demografische veranderingen op de onderwerpen die met de sociale, economische en gezondheidsstatus van de ouderen in een ouder wordende populatie samenhangen.1,2
