De onbetwistbare inhaalslag van adoptiekinderen

Reactie op ‘Adoptie: een positieve interventie?’ van Hoksbergen

Samenvatting

In zijn reactie stelt Hoksbergen dat wij in ons tweeluik over adoptie (Juffer & Van IJzendoorn, 2008; Van IJzendoorn & Juffer, 2008) te zeer zouden benadrukken dat adoptie een positieve interventie is. Op grond van ons meta-analytisch onderzoek trekken wij inderdaad de conclusie dat adoptiekinderen gemiddeld een substantiële en indrukwekkende inhaalslag maken vergeleken met kinderen die moeten opgroeien in tehuizen. Tegelijkertijd verdienen de relatief bescheiden achterstanden en tekorten van adoptiekinderen in vergelijking met hun leeftijdgenoten onze zorg en aandacht. In dit weerwoord maken we van de gelegenheid gebruik om enkele punten te verduidelijken of nader toe te lichten.
