Samenvatting

Emoties spelen een belangrijke rol in het leven. Ook in het persoonlijke en intermenselijke verkeer. Dat vergt de ontwikkeling van bepaalde emotionele vaardigheden. Hierin staat het intelligent onderkennen, reguleren en toepassen van emoties centraal. Onderzoek laat zien dat jeugdigen die deze vaardigheden niet hebben, persoonlijk en sociaal al snel vastlopen. Ouders, leraren en leeftijdgenoten vinden het vaak lastig om met deze kinderen om te gaan, waardoor gevoelens van afwijzing en gedragsproblemen tot ontwikkeling kunnen komen. Emotionele vaardigheden zijn echter te leren. Niet alleen het gezin, ook de school kan daarin een belangrijke bijdrage leveren. In dit hoofdstuk wordt aangegeven hoe dit kan plaatsvinden. Hiernaast presenteren we een aantal principes en methoden die de emotionele vaardigheden kunnen bevorderen. Ook schetsen we een aantal wetenschappelijk onderbouwde behandelingsprogramma’s die gericht zijn op versterking van de emotionele vaardigheden.
