Samenvatting

In dit hoofdstuk gaan we in op de vaardigheden die onmisbaar zijn om goed te kunnen functioneren in onze samenleving. Het gaat hierbij niet alleen om het adequaat deelnemen aan het sociale verkeer, maar ook om daarin je zelf te zijn. Naast sociale omgangsvaardigheden komen persoonlijke vaardigheden, zoals zelfsturing en zelfbewustzijn aan bod. Jeugdigen die psychosociale vaardigheden missen, lopen het risico om gedragsproblemen te ontwikkelen. We geven aan hoe dat is te voorkomen en hoe de ontwikkeling van essentiële psychosociale vaardigheden is te bevorderen. Deze maatregelen zijn vaak eenvoudig toepasbaar door opvoeders, leraren en mentoren. Bij autisme of ADHD zijn doorgaans aanvullend nog speciale interventies nodig. Dit is eveneens bij angstig en stemmingsverstoord gedrag of wanneer ernstige sociale gedragsproblemen spelen, zoals boosheid, agressie of een antisociale houding. Een aantal wetenschappelijk bewezen interventieprogramma’s om de ontwikkeling van de psychosociale vaardigheden bij deze jeugdigen te bevorderen, passeert de revue.
