Er is potentieel een grote markt voor dergelijke middelen; mensen willen zichzelf graag ‘verbeteren’ en gebruiken nu al allerlei geheugenpreparaten en smart-drugs, waarvan de werking onbewezen is, met alle gezondheidsrisico's van dien (Keppel Hesselink, 1998). Het gebruik van middelen die de stemming verbeteren en sociaal contact vergemakkelijken (alcohol en drugs) is van alle tijden. Commerciële belangen zullen de ontwikkeling van nieuwe enhancers dan ook aanjagen. Te verwachten valt dat middelen die worden ontwikkeld voor een specifiek ziektebeeld (bijvoorbeeld Alzheimer) ook off-label zullen worden voorgeschreven of (via internet) zonder voorschrift van een arts zullen worden gebruikt. …
