Asymmetrie in de coördinatie: simultaan bewegende armen beïnvloeden elkaar, maar niet even sterk

Samenvatting

Wanneer je je beide handen simultaan beweegt, worden deze onderling door elkaar beïnvloed. Deze zogenoemde bimanuele interacties (ofwel koppelingen) komen bijvoorbeeld naar voren bij het bekende ‘tikken op het hoofd en rondjes draaien op de buik’. Al zijn de individuele bewegingen noch zo simpel, door die interacties is het zonder speciale oefening schier onmogelijk de handen onafhankelijk van elkaar te bewegen, wat bijvoorbeeld voor beginnende pianisten heel frustrerend kan zijn. Aan de andere kant zijn voor het dagelijks coördinatief handelen diezelfde interacties onmisbaar, aangezien bij het gros van de alledaagse bimanuele taken de acties van de beide handen in meer of mindere mate op elkaar (dienen te) worden afgestemd in termen van kracht, positie, timing, et cetera, zoals bij het verplaatsen van een groot en zwaar voorwerp met twee handen, het schillen van een appel, of het schrijven van een brief. Dit geldt ook voor niet-manuele taken zoals lopen. Om inzicht te krijgen in deze interacties en andere (neurale) processen die een rol spelen bij de coördinatie tussen de verschillende delen van het lichaam en de mogelijke beperkingen daarbij (zoals bij kinderen met Developmental Coordination Disorder en patiënten die een cva hebben ondergaan) wordt in deze context met name onderzoek gedaan naar ritmische bimanuele bewegingen (zoals het tikken met of ritmisch heen en weer bewegen van vingers, of het tekenen van cirkels).
