Samenvatting

Meerlingzwangerschappen komen de laatste decennia frequenter voor dan in het verleden. Uitstelgedrag en het toegenomen gebruik van ovulatie-inducerende middelen bij fertiliteitsbevorderende behandelingen zijn hiervan de oorzaak. De toename heeft grotendeels betrekking op dichoriale meerlingen, hetgeen voor de prognose relatief gunstig is.
Het vroegtijdig vaststellen van een meerlingzwangerschap en in het bijzonder van de chorioniciteit staat aan de basis van een goede begeleiding.
Bij de preventie spelen zorgvuldige indicatiestelling bij fertiliteitsbehandelingen en vrouwen de gelegenheid bieden een zwangerschap eerder te realiseren een rol.
