11 Dementie en cognitieve stoornissen

Samenvatting

Het conventionele beeld van de ziekte van Alzheimer is dat van een onbehandelbare aandoening, die gepaard gaat met aantasting van instrumentele en basisactiviteiten van het dagelijks leven en waarvan de diagnose na uitsluiting gesteld wordt. De nadruk ligt dan ook op het tijdig voorzien in mantelzorg of residentiële zorg. In dit hoofdstuk belichten we aan de hand van voorbeelden enkele nieuwere aspecten van deze aandoening:
  • de chronologie, te beginnen bij het predementiële stadium;
  • de positieve klinische diagnostische kenmerken;
  • het praktische belang van de differentiële diagnose;
  • de behandelbaarheid van de aandoening.
