Nerve Growth Factor als geneesmiddel: eens een belofte, altijd een belofte?

Abstract

Het ontdekken van de Nerve Growth Factor (ngf) door Rita Levi–Montalcini is een mijlpaal geweest in de neuro-embryonale geschiedenis. Voor het eerst werd aangetoond dat de ene cel een andere cel door het uitscheiden van een trofe factor op afstand kan aanzetten ‘iets’ te doen, in dit geval het laten uitgroeien van een zenuwceluitloper.

n.b. Bij ischemie ten gevolge van een infarct is plaatselijk de bloedhersenbarrière lek en zouden intraveneus gegeven neurotrofe factoren precies de goede neuronen kunnen bereiken.
