Abstract

Het is gebleken dat herstel na perifeer zenuwletsel enigermate beïnvloedbaar is, in positieve zin (door middel van farmaca, microchirurgie of training), of in negatieve zin (bijvoorbeeld door chronische stress). Opvallend is dat het herstel per individu kwalitatief en kwantitatief varieert, ongeacht de experimentele manipulaties. Wellicht dat recent ontstane, integratieve biomedische wetenschapsvormen – waaronder de psychoneuroimmunologie – enig inzicht kunnen bieden in de achtergronden van die variabiliteit en, op termijn, in de klinische relevantie ervan.
