Samenvatting

Borstkanker ontregelt het hele leven; niet alleen in de periode van de diagnose maar ook daarna. In dit hoofdstuk beschrijven we wat borstkanker is, hoe vaak deze voorkomt en wat de oorzaken en symptomen van de ziekte zijn. Vervolgens bespreken we de erfelijke belasting voor borstkanker en de mogelijkheden voor vroege opsporing. We behandelen wat borstkanker doet met vrouwen en hun omgeving en bespreken de diagnose, de behandelingen en de directe en late gevolgen van borstkanker. De uitdagingen voor zelfmanagement tijdens het continuüm van borstkankerzorg komen daarna aan bod. Tot slot behandelen we hoe je als verpleegkundige de patiënt kunt bijstaan tijdens diagnose, behandeling, herstel en nazorg, of bij uitgezaaide borstkanker en hoe je het zelfmanagement en de eigen regie van mensen met borstkanker effectief kunt versterken.
