Waarom nog psychotherapie bij ouderen?

Samenvatting

Sinds jaar en dag bestaat het hardnekkige idee dat psychotherapie bij ouderen weinig soelaas biedt. Ouderen zouden star zijn, geen behoefte hebben om te veranderen en een toekomstperspectief ontbreekt. Dit komt onder andere tot uiting in het gegeven dat het aantal uren ‘psychotherapeut’ en ‘gz-psycholoog’ binnen verpleeg- en verzorgingshuizen beduidend minder is dan je op basis van de hoeveelheid patiënten zou verwachten. Ook binnen de ggz is pas de laatste jaren meer oog voor psychotherapeutische behandelmogelijkheden voor ouderen. Echter, verwijzingen voor psychotherapie bij ouderen kennen nog steeds een hoge drempel, voor de verwijzers maar ook voor de ouderen zelf. Is dat terecht? Wat is het effect van psychotherapie in de (voor)laatste levensfase en hoe goed is dat effect onderzocht? Met de voorliggende literatuurstudie naar reviewstudies over psychotherapie bij ouderen proberen we daarop een antwoord te vinden.
