24. Verslaving en persoonlijkheidspathologie

Samenvatting

Sinds de invoering van de DSM-III in 1980 met een aparte as (as II) voor persoonlijkheidsstoornissen is er steeds meer belangstelling gekomen voor het onderzoek naar comorbiditeit van persoonlijkheidsstoornissen bij patiënten met verslavingsproblemen. De drijvende kracht achter deze belangstelling waren en zijn nog steeds de problemen die zorgprofessionals ervaren in het omgaan met en de behandeling van patiënten met deze vorm van comorbiditeit. Hoewel persoonlijkheidsstoornissen al langer het onderwerp zijn van talloze verslavingsonderzoeken, hebben onderzoekers op dit gebied nog maar heel weinig aandacht besteed aan het tegelijkertijd optreden van verslaving en persoonlijkheidspathologie. Deze stand van zaken is moeilijk te begrijpen als men bedenkt dat de combinatie van middelengebruik en persoonlijkheidsstoornissen een van de meest voorkomende vormen van psychiatrische comorbiditeit is. In boeken over persoonlijkheidsstoornissen wordt het onderwerp middelengebruik maar zelden aan de orde gesteld.
