1. Invloed van langdurige vroegkinderlijke negatieve ervaringen op de ontwikkeling van de borderlinepersoonlijkheidsstoornis

Een neurobiologisch perspectief

Samenvatting

De laatste jaren vindt het meeste empirisch onderzoek naar de neurobiologie en neuroanatomie van persoonlijkheidstrekken plaats bij de borderlinepersoonlijkheidsstoornis (BPS). De BPS is een complexe stoornis. De BPS-populatie is zeer heterogeen van samenstelling wat betreft etiologie, neuropathofysiologie, symptomatologie en comorbiditeit. Er zijn empirische aanwijzingen dat chronische traumatische stress of een opeenstapeling van negatieve ervaringen op jeugdige leeftijd sterk samenhangt met de ontwikkeling van ernstige persoonlijkheidspathologie, chronische depressiviteit en, in mindere mate, een posttraumatische stressstoornis (PTSS). Er is inmiddels voldoende dierexperimentele en humane evidentie voor de veronderstelling dat langdurige, ernstige traumatisering in de jeugd structurele en functionele veranderingen teweeg kan brengen in de hersenen. In dit hoofdstuk wordt het empirisch onderzoek naar de mogelijke rol van langdurige vroegkinderlijke traumatisering in de ontwikkeling van ernstige symptomatologie bij BPS besproken vanuit een neurobiologisch perspectief.
