Samenvatting

Dé oudere bestaat niet: er zijn grote verschillen in de wijze waarop mensen oud worden en door de sociale omgeving oud worden gemaakt. Sociale theorieën die een verklaring willen geven voor dat proces belichten elk een ander aspect. Vroege theorievorming is gekleurd door normatieve opvattingen over goed ouder worden. We bespreken recentere, meer beschrijvende, stromingen die de nadruk leggen op een structureel perspectief, op het handelingsperspectief, of op beide. Ook wordt aan de hand van een voorbeeld uitgelegd hoe die inzichten kunnen worden toepast bij het begrijpen van gerontologische vraagstukken.
