Samenvatting

Pathologisch kwijlen is in de meeste gevallen een gevolg van neurologische afwijkingen en/of afwijkingen in het orofaciale gebied.
Kwijlen kan op verschillende manieren worden bestreden:
  • Logopedie (verbetering slikfunctie) en fysiotherapie (verbetering lichaamshouding) in milde gevallen, bij patiënten die ervoor openstaan.
  • Anticholinerge medicatie (scopolamine, benzatropine en glycopyrrolaat) kan worden gebruikt om de speekselsecretie te remmen.
  • Injecteren van speekselklieren met botulinetoxine A; dit toxine remt gedurende een aantal maanden de speekselafgifte en kan daarna herhaald worden.
  • Chirurgisch verwijderen van de speekselklieren of verleggen van de afvoergangen.
  • Lage dosis radiotherapie.
