Samenvatting

  • Ongeveer 15% van de Nederlandse bevolking heeft in meer of mindere mate last van een slechte adem. Dit neemt met de leeftijd toe: 25% van de 70-jarigen heeft een slechte adem.
  • Slechte adem wordt vooral veroorzaakt door anaerobe mondbacteriën, die eiwitten afbreken. Hierbij komen vluchtige zwavelverbindingen vrij met een kwalijke geur.
  • Zwavelverbindingen zoals H2S en CH3SH, spelen mogelijk een rol bij de pathogenese van parodontitis.
  • Een goede mondhygiëne is van primair belang om halitose tegen te gaan.
  • Als hulpmiddel kunnen antiseptische mondspoelwaters worden gebruikt.
  • Stimulatie van de speekselsecretie, bijvoorbeeld door te kauwen op kauwgom, bevordert de afvoer van de stinkende verbindingen.
