Roken en lichaamsgewicht bij meisjes

Samenvatting

Het rookgedrag van jongeren wordt sinds 1990 bestudeerd in het kader van de studie ‘Jongeren en Gezondheid’ onder auspiciën van de WHO (Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie). Daarnaast coördineerde het Vlaams Instituut voor Gezondheidspromotie (VIG, 2003) het ‘European Network on Young People and Tobacco’, waarin verschillen in het rookgedrag van jongens en meisjes werden onderzocht. De gegevens voor Vlaanderen (Vereecken & Maes, 2002) tonen aan dat jongeren steeds meer en steeds vroeger beginnen te roken. Tot 1996 was de stijging voor jongens beduidend groter dan voor meisjes. Sindsdien hebben de meisjes een duidelijke inhaalbeweging gemaakt en staan nu bijna op dezelfde frequentie als de jongens (cijfers voor 2002: dagelijks roken in de leeftijdsgroep 11-18 jaar =14% jongens, 12% meisjes).
