Psychologische aspecten van diabetes per ontwikkelingsfase

Samenvatting

De impact van diabetes op het kind en het gezin en de manier waarop de behandeling het beste vormgegeven kan worden zijn afhankelijk van de leeftijd en het ontwikkelingsniveau van het kind. Het ontwikkelingsniveau van het kind is bepalend om te begrijpen hoe het kind reageert op de ziekte, zijn betrokkenheid in ziektemanagement en om te bepalen welk type interventie het meest effectief is. De ontwikkeling van een kind wordt bepaald door het samenspel van het kind, met zijn eigen persoonlijkheid en aanleg, en zijn omgeving: het bio-psycho-sociale model. Om het functioneren van kinderen met diabetes en hun ouders te begrijpen dient dan ook rekening te worden gehouden met de complexe relatie tussen biologisch en psychologisch functioneren in de sociale context en dit alles vanuit een ontwikkelingsperspectief.
In dit artikel worden de psychologische aspecten van diabetes per ontwikkelingsfase beschreven. De volgende fasen worden hierbij onderscheiden: de baby-peuterfase, de kleuterfase, de latentiefase, de pre-adolescentiefase en de adolescentiefase. Diabetes wordt vaak gezien als een familieziekte vanwege de bijdrage van de ouders aan het ziektemanagement en hun superviserende rol. Om deze reden wordt speciale aandacht besteed aan de rol van de ouders in dit proces. Ook is er steeds meer bekend over de neuropsychologische invloed van diabetes op het zich ontwikkelende brein. Derhalve wordt ook hier extra aandacht aan besteed.
