Placebo's en placebo-effecten

Abstract

Wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar de effectiviteit van een medicamenteuze behandeling maakt in de regel gebruik van een placebo. Door het gebruik van een placebo kan het onderzoek geblindeerd worden uitgevoerd. Dit houdt in dat zowel de arts/onderzoeker als de patiënt niet weet of hij het farmacon dan wel de placebo toedient/krijgt. In dit artikel beschrijf ik de historie van het gebruik van placebo's in klinisch wetenschappelijk onderzoek, de opkomst van het besef van het bestaan van het placebo-effect, enkele veel gemaakt fouten omtrent de interpretatie van het placebo-effect, en experimenteel onderzoek naar de etiologie van dit effect.
