In de Middeleeuwen werd door rouwenden tijdens begrafenissen vaak het begin van Psalm 114, vers 9 gezongen: ‘Placebo Domino in regione vivorum’ (‘Ik zal de Heer behagen in het land der levenden’). Vaak werden mensen ingehuurd voor dit rouwritueel, die om die reden werden betiteld als placebo's. Het woord ‘placebo’ heeft mede hierdoor de negatieve connotatie van ‘niet echt’ gekregen. Zo'n tweehonderd jaar geleden werd het woord ‘placebo’ voor het eerst in een medische context gebruikt. In Quincy's New Medical Dictionary (1811) werd een placebo aangeduid als ‘een behandeling meer bedoeld om te behagen dan om daadwerkelijk te genezen’. …
