Abstract

De hersenen zijn zonder twijfel het meest complexe orgaan in ons lichaam en het doorgronden van hun specifieke functies is een van de grootste intellectuele uitdagingen van onze tijd. Bij het bestuderen van met name de menselijke hersenen stuit men echter op een aantal ethische en technische problemen, vooral ten aanzien van de bereikbaarheid van de hersenen. Alhoewel de in vivo beeldverwerkende technieken, zoals pet (positron emission tomography), spect (single photon emission computer tomography), (f)mri ((functional) Magnetic Resonance Imaging) en meg (magnetic electroenchephalography) in de afgelopen jaren steeds beter zijn geworden, is met name ten aanzien van de spatiële en temporele resolutie nog grote verbetering nodig.
