10. Palliatieve zorg bij patiënten met hartfalen

Samenvatting

Ondanks de verbeterde overleving van patiënten met hartfalen blijft de prognose van hartfalen slecht en hebben veel patiënten last van verschillende belastende symptomen en klachten. Wat de beperkte overleving en de ziektelast betreft is hartfalen in zekere zin vergelijkbaar met sommige andere ernstige en/of chronische aandoeningen. Lerend van de oncologie wordt nu ook binnen de hartfalenzorg gesproken over een ‘palliatieve benadering’ van patiënten. Onder een palliatieve benadering wordt verstaan dat er in de behandeling expliciet aandacht is voor het verbeteren van de kwaliteit van leven van patiënten en hun naasten en voor symptoombestrijding en het optimaal beperken van het lijden. In dit hoofdstuk worden achtergronden bij palliatieve zorg voor patiënten met hartfalen besproken en worden enkele praktische aanwijzingen gegeven met betrekking tot palliatieve zorg en communicatie met patiënten gedurende het verloop van de ziekte. Daarnaast willen we de lezer verwijzen naar algemene literatuur en richtlijnen over palliatieve zorg bij chronische zieken.
