Neurologische symptomen in het perspectief van een verspreide representatie van vrije wil

Samenvatting

Vrije wil is een functie die vaak wordt toegeschreven aan de prefrontale cortex. In de klinische neurologie wordt bij prefrontale beschadiging consistent afname van initiatief en toegenomen reflexmatig gedrag gezien. Recent onderzoek laat echter ook pariëtale bijdragen zien aan zowel vrije selectie in vroege stadia van sensorimotore transformaties als de perceptie zelf een beweging te initiëren. Dit geeft aan dat het begrip ‘vrije wil’ niet alleen geassocieerd is met de prefrontale cortex maar uitgebreider gerepresenteerd is in de hersenen. In deze context wordt een systematische re-interpretatie van pariëtale symptomen besproken.
