Samenvatting

Dit hoofdstuk besteedt aandacht aan de basis van de belichaamde ervaring: het autonome zenuwstelsel. Aan de orde komen de neuroceptietheorie van Stephen Porges en de rol van vroegkinderlijke trauma’s bij de activering van de dorsovagale kern, die leidt tot dissociatieve verschijnselen. Hyperarousal (sympathische activatie) en hypoarousal komen veel voor in de spreekkamer van de psychotherapeut. In deze toestanden is therapeutisch werk in feite niet mogelijk. In dit hoofdstuk worden interventies beschreven om patiënten weer in het sociale-engagementsysteem te krijgen waarin een evenwicht tussen interactieve en zelfregulatie kan ontstaan. Van daaruit kan het vermogen tot symbolisering en mentalisering vorm krijgen.
