Samenvatting

In dit hoofdstuk bespreek ik de ontwikkeling van een afgegrensd zelfbesef: het besef dat het lichaam ‘van mij’ is. Daarin blijkt aanraking een centrale rol te spelen. Aanraking heeft in de psychotherapie geen plaats, maar we kunnen ons wel rekenschap geven van de aan- of afwezigheid van aanraking in de sociale context van onze patiënten en de invloed daarvan in het verleden op de ontwikkeling. Naast huidgrenzen die door aanraking wordt gedefinieerd, zijn er nog twee grenzen met de buitenwereld waarmee de mens te maken heeft: het immuunsysteem en de darmbacteriën. De laatste blijken onontbeerlijk voor onze gezondheid. Nieuwe bevindingen over het microbioom en de relatie met stemming en emoties geven een ander kijk op veel verschijnselen in de klinische praktijk.
